Giant Rattle Breadseed Poppy

We absolutely love these giant poppies! While we don’t grow them just for their blooms, their massive flowers are stunning and come in soft shades of creamy white, blush pink, and pale apricot, often with delicate crinkled petals. We grow them primarily for their oversized pods, which add unique texture and interest to any bouquet. They also dry beautifully, making them a versatile addition to fresh or dried arrangements.

Packet size: approximately 100 seeds

Growing Tips

  • Sowing: Direct sow in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, or in fall for early blooms the following spring. These poppies prefer cool conditions.

  • Hint: We have actually found success starting the seeds inside about 4 weeks before planting out. They can tolerate some cold, so don’t wait until may to get them in the ground! Plant them when the soil can be worked and when temps stay around 35 at night.

  • Soil: Well-draining soil with full sun. Avoid overly rich soil, too much nitrogen can reduce pod formation.

  • Spacing: Sow seeds thinly, about 6–12” apart, as these plants grow large.

  • Watering: Keep evenly moist until established; mature plants are moderately drought-tolerant.

  • Care: Once flowering ends, allow pods to mature on the plant before harvesting for dried arrangements or bouquet use.

Why We Love Them: Giant Rattle Breadseed Poppies are perfect for unique, eye-catching filler in bouquets. The giant pods and bold, soft-colored blooms create drama and texture that stands out in any arrangement—fresh or dried!
